Spring is here, and many people are dusting off their tools for those growing lists of home improvement projects.
In the construction industry, welders never put them down. As part of National Welding Month, CEC Facilities Group is honoring the men and women who help us succeed through their skill in this trade. Welding is a vital part of CEC’s operations, both on the jobsite and in the prefabrication center.
While anyone can learn the basic welding skills, it takes a remarkable craftsman to be a successful welder. There are more than 30 welding processes in four main categories: arc, oxyfuel gas, resistance, and solid-state.
“It takes someone who knows the rules and still plays it by ear, all while still following safety guidelines,” said Christopher Green. “It takes time to gain that experience.”
Those eager to work with their hands are in luck. Like almost all skilled trades careers, welders are in short supply. According to the American Welding Society, the United States faces a 375,000-worker deficit by 2023. Companies like CEC are investing in new methods and technology to maximize welder production, which helps welders become even more valuable.
The growth of prefabrication has spurred another welding perk. CEC fabricates sheet-metal products, panel boards, piping/plumbing, and other equipment at its Irving warehouse. In the past, these operations were performed on a jobsite. Today’s centralization provides for higher quality, safety, and production all in a controlled environment. That’s a big plus over working with 3,000-Fahrenheit flames on a jobsite in August.
As explained in this previous blog, CEC’s prefabrication gives our customers an additional boost through our Operational Excellence program. All the photos on this page show welded assemblies created in the first quarter of 2021.
CEC thanks all the welders that make our projects succeed. CEC also understands the importance of informing our youth of the opportunities present in a trades career. To learn more about welding, visit AWS.org, or contact CEC to learn how to begin a career in the trades.
