CEC Facilities Group has more than 40 female teammates, including more than a dozen in field-primary roles. Many of those in the office have past field experience ranging from leadership to skilled labor.

CEC, which prides itself as an innovation-driven company, understands that the more diversity of thought available in an organization equates to a more forward-looking group. The best way to increase that innovation is through supporting underrepresented groups. Women make up roughly 10 percent of the national construction industry, and only about 2 percent works in the field.

Christie Barnard, Nikki Bonds, and Cindy Mullins discussed their roles and how they are thriving in their chosen professions:

Christie Barnard, Technology Foreman

Innovation drives Christie. She loves learning about the latest technology and installation methods. It’s no wonder she works with CEC’s audio-visual and technology departments. With more than 15 years in the low-voltage industry, she has mastered everything from structured cabling to distributed antenna systems.

“I grew up in the trades. I have experienced many different sides of the low-voltage industry,” she said, adding she enjoys “interfacing with the customer and delivering a product that meets or exceeds customer expectations.”

Nikki Bonds, Operations Administrative Assistant

Nikki was looking for a new challenge.

She came to CEC with a background in healthcare staffing and recruiting, eager to make her mark in a new industry. Since joining, she has quickly adapted her skills. She maintains CEC’s labor operations, making sure every teammate has steady work as each project ends.

“I enjoy being able to support employees in both the field and office,” she said. “Every day is different.”

Annie Lukayisu, Electrical Tradesman

Born and raised across the Atlantic, Annie started her electrical engineering career before leaving for Texas in 2011. She learned to speak English within a year while enrolling simultaneously in IEC and Everest College for electrical studies. She has extensive experience in the electrical construction industry in both Africa and the U.S. Annie has a passion for the electrical trade and loves what she does in her career.

She is married and a proud mom to three children: an 18-year old son and two 15-year old twin girls.

Cindy Mullins, Senior Mechanical Estimator

Cindy has an independent spirit. As someone who enjoys creating with her own two hands, construction was a natural fit.

Now with four decades of experience under her toolbelt, Cindy’s technical understanding of all HVAC equipment helps her “set the standards for our estimating department,” Mechanical Business Unit Leader Kurt Hansen said. “She also assumes the role of engineer and business development leader.”
Cindy’s favorite part of the construction industry is the great leaders she works with every day.
